Christmas Markets in Prague 2017

From 2nd of December until 6th of January 2018

The Christmas markets make Prague a heaven for the Christmas enthusiastic shoppers. Christmas markets are held in many places of this city and are open right at the beginning of Advent until 1st of January. However, you can experience the most magical atmosphere on Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí), where next to the little stalls and a small nativity dominates a huge Christmas tree gleaming with lights and decorations. Another popular market is in the lower part of Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí), on the Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky). The markets on Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) and Tyl square (Tylovo náměstí) have a more intimate atmosphere.

On the markets you can buy traditional handicrafts, beautiful handmade Christmas decorations, warm wool socks and slippers and many more nicely made handicraft. Sweet lovers will be delighted with the stalls that are full of traditional Czech Christmas sweets.

You can taste homemade Christmas sweet bread, beautifully decorated gingerbread, short-crust pastry cookies which are typical Czech Christmas treats. For people who prefer savoury food, there is plenty to choose from. A wonderful way to warm up in this cold winter time is with a glass of sweetly scented mullet wine (svařák) or golden mead (medovina).

They are made using many different materials (wood, ceramics, gypsum…) and are easily found in the historical city centre. They make a popular souvenir item at an affordable price. Amongst the most famous puppets are witches, fanciful puppets and other well-known figures of the Czech theatre.

Wooden Toys

More and more shops are offering wooden toys. Most of them are very good quality, however relatively expensive. They make valuable toys.

Czech Crystal

Bohemian crystal is a much appreciated souvenirs as it is one of the clearest crystals in the world. It will surely satisfy the most demanding modern and traditional tastes. There is a whole range of products in shops, from cheaper figurines to more modern objects by some of the most famous designers. Beware as there also are imitations! Some shops offer questionable products. When buying, do not rush, take your time and choose well.

Bohemian Garnet

The Czech Republic is the only place in Europe where you can find a deposit of these precious stones. Garnet has a dark red colour which is noticeable only in the direct light. The stones are cut in various shapes, imaginative design so it can adorn rings, glass, sculptures…You can purchase this precious stone in many jewel shops in the city, however be aware that some of the garnets sold in shops can be non genuine products.

Christmas Decorations

On the Christmas Markets you can also find typical Czech Christmas tree ornaments for example hand-blown and painted glass balls, bells or wooden, paper garlands.

The Prague Christmas markets in the 2017/2018 season will be open as follow:
Peace Square (Náměstí Míru): from 20th November until 24th December 2017
Tyl Square (Tylovo náměstí): from 23rd November until 24th December 2017
Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky): from 25th November until 24th December 2017
These markets are open daily from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí): from 2nd December until 6th January 2018
Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí): from 2nd December until 6th January 2018
Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky, in front of the PALLADIUM Shopping Center ): from 2nd December until 6th January 2018
These markets are open daily from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., food and refreshment stalls: from 10 a.m until midnight.
